Introduction to Feminism

Watch the Everyday Sexism TED talk from Laura Bates (linked above) and answer the following questions: 1) Why did Laura Bates start the Everyday Sexism project? She started this because people kept saying how women were equal now and that they shouldn't be making a fuss. However, Bates wasn't convinced about it and decided it was time to ''make a fuss,'' therefore she set up a website because she realized that you can't solve a problem if people act like the problem never existed. 2) How does the Everyday Sexism project link to the concept of post-feminism? Is feminism still required in western societies? It links to the idea that we're in  post-feminism  as people continuously say that women are equal now and they shouldn't be making a fuss about it, therefore confirming that  feminism  is still required in western societies.  3) Why was new technology essential to the success of the Everyday Sexism project? She didn't have any source of funding

2nd Assessment LR

*DISCLAIMER* MY PREDICTED GRADE IS FOR THE END OF YEAR 13, IMPROVEMENT CAN 100% BE MADE. WWW: Your unseen analysis is very strong and you offer interesting points and examples in Q4. Now you need to develop consistency across the whole paper. EBI: Revise industry and public service broadcasting - this is costing you quite a few relatively easy marks. Be a little more critical in the 20-mark essay... question theories, explore other side of argument (positive impact media). I keep on ''dumbing things down'', I know I could be doing better however I need to elaborate what I'm trying to say in full detail. I also think that going too fast is another occurring stump, for example: on question 3 I went into it too fast and ended up switching around my for and against arguments. I need to give myself enough time to think before I write.  On a scale of 1-10, I'd say 7. I did way more revision for this assessment than I did the last. However, I think I over prepared on t

Representation Blog Tasks

1) Why is representation an important concept in Media Studies? They are important as they have the power to shape an audience's knowledge and understanding about the relevant topics around representation. 2) How does the example of Kate Middleton show the way different meanings can be created in the media? A picture editor selects the photo from a whole series of images to be used to illustrate a news story. The image may be cropped, resized and, in some cases, photoshopped. A news editor will decide on the way the story will be presented, and the use of captions to pin down, or anchor, the meaning of the image. The photograph of Kate Middleton in the newspaper is a re-presentation of what she looks like, with people controlling and manipulating the image at various stages throughout the process. The Duchess herself, the person, is some distance away from the image that is reproduced. 3) Summarise the section 'The how, who and why of media representation' in 50 words. All

Regulation Blog Tasks

1) What is regulation and why do media industries need to be regulated? Regulation is defined as  the practices established to control and manage an activity or process . Media industries need to be regulated in order to ensure that organisations operate fairly. 2) What is OFCOM responsible for? Ofcom is  the regulator for the communications services that we use and rely on each day . We make sure people get the best from their broadband, home phone and mobile services, as well as keeping an eye on TV and radio. 3) Look at the section on the OFCOM broadcasting code. Which do you think are the three most important sections of the broadcasting code and why? 1. Protecting the under eighteens  - I feel that this is one of the most important sections of the broadcasting code as under eighteens have basically no restrictions on the internet, opening them up to the dangers of technology. 2. Privacy  - This is another crucial area of the broadcasting code as I think that everyone has the right
