Ownership and Control

Media conglomerate research 1) Type up your research notes from the lesson - what did you find out about your allocated media conglomerate?   Alphabet: -Subsidaries: Google, Waymo, Verily, Google Fiber. These are all examples of Vertical Integration as all of Alphabet's subsidiaries are linked to technology and the internet. Alphabet does have convergence as Google is practically on every device available.  2) Do you agree that governments should prevent media conglomerates from becoming too dominant? Write an argument that looks at both sides of this debate. I believe that the government should allow media conglomerates to have a sense of control behind them  because other small media companies should also have a chance at being well known (For example, indie media companies produce great films with important messages for their audience and that media companies should have the recognition they deserve as they are promoting class work which could change people's views and opini

Audience theory 2

  1) Social learning theory has been criticised for simplifying the causes of violence in society. Do you think the media is responsible for anti-social behaviour and violence? I think the media isn't responsible for anti-social behaviour because it all comes down to what social group the individual surrounds themselves with and how they grew up or other things the person is going through. For example, when certain people feel down, they choose to not want to talk to anyone as they prefer to be alone. However, I believe it's the same with violence as  sometimes video games can encourage aggression but I don't believe that it's mainly the medias fault as there are other factors. 2) How is social learning theory relevant in the digital age? Are young people now learning behaviour from social media and the internet? Give examples. I think that when we see other people doing certain things, we are influenced by them and copy them (for example, if your sitting in a room fill

Audience Classification

  1) Make sure your   psychographics presentation   is uploaded on your blog with   all  details of the couple and their media consumption (it needs to be on everybody's blog individually but can be a duplicate of your partner's post). Who you are working with : Enzo, Julia.  The psychographic group you are researching : Aspirers  Introduce your example couple that represents your group : 1) Make up their names :  Lando and Nyah.  2) Where do they work/study?   Nyah is a fashion designer and Lando is an artist.  3) What do they do in their spare time? Shopping, paint/draw, watch TV shows.  Print:   What newspapers/magazines does your group read (if any)? Is this on paper or tablet?   Tatler, Vogue. Probably on a tablet.  Broadcast:   What TV programmes/channels do your group watch? Radio stations? TV package – Freeview or Sky? Films? I'm a celebrity get me out of here, The apprentice, Dragon's den.  Online:   What technology do they own? What websites do they visit (if

Audience Theory 1

  1) Read this  Mail Online article about the effects of videogames . How does this article link to the hypodermic needle model? -The article suggests that kids/other age groups are prone to be more violent when playing video games and this goes hand in hand with the hypodermic needle model, which suggest that the media injects what you see into your head - like a hypodermic needle. 2) How does coverage of the Talk Talk hacking case (see Daily Mail front page below) link to the hypodermic needle model? Why might someone  criticise  this front page? -The coverage of the Talk Talk hacking case in the newspaper links to the hypodermic needle model as people might end up seeing this and either 1. believe all children with  unrestricted internet access are all very capable of hacking into big tech companies, or 2. children will end up "influenced" by this article and end up wanting to recreate this for their own amusement - TL;DR people who come across this article with instantly

Assessment 1: Learner Response

WWW: ''This is a real mix: Q2 + Q3 show real potential and if you can match    that level across the whole paper you will be    in good shape.'' EBI: ''Knowledge and revision is key: look over narrative and genre theory to boost Q1 + Q3.  -Q4 really holds you back: was this an exam technique issue (focus on question) or a       knowledge issue (reception theory) ? Work it out and put it right next time!'' -1 key thing I think I struggled with was linking my answers back to the respectful theory the question was based on. This was a reoccurring theme in every question. -One potential point I could have mentioned would have to be linking my answers back to theories, which I didn't do. This is a reoccurring potential point too. -In the assessment I didn't get any theories correct, in fact I didn't have any written at all. They are all very tricky to remember as there's a lot to take note of, it's just something I have to constantly revis

Reading an Image/Reception Theory

Image
The advert sports a black and white colour scheme which portrays a life and death situation, which could’ve been purposefully used to shed light on 50 Cent's past - being shot 9 times and surviving. Furthermore, the text being littered with “O’s” again presents the idea of bullet holes. The fingerprints hint at a crime scene/investigation, however it can also be interpreted that reebok could be trying to help their audience in finding their own identity. "I am what i am" emphasises this interpretation even more. This quote from 50 Cent is done to empower the audience and that despite their past they should not feel ashamed and take everyday not for granted. I think that they had 50 Cent have direct address with the audience -serious facial expression- to emphasise the message "I am what I am.” 50 wearing a baseball cap backwards, earrings and a chain all portray the theme of gangs and crime. The black background behind him suggests his dark past however the lighting

Narrative Blog tasks

1) Give an example from film or television that uses Todorov's narrative structure of equilibrium, disequilibrium and new equilibrium.  Disequilibrium - The Boys Equilibrium - My hero Academia New Equilibrium - Every Marvel movie ever (except Endgame and Infinity War) 2) Complete the activity on page 1 of the Fact sheet: find a clip on YouTube of the opening of a new TV drama series (season 1, episode 1). Embed the clip in your blog and write an analysis of the narrative markers that help establish setting, character and plot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MB3inHJO2FM The scene opens up with a junction that is alienated and surrounded in by a forest with a single police car driving towards the camera. We see our main character - who is a police officer due to his uniform - get out of his car and we see a vacant truck on its side which we can call the disequilibrium. As the scene carries on, we see even more abandoned vehicles that have been totalled, which creates an enigma code
